Technology Applications TEKS Review, Kindergarten–Grade 8

The State Board of Education (SBOE) has authority for the review and adoption of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for each subject of the required curriculum. SBOE members nominate educators, parents, business and industry representatives, and employers to serve on the review work groups. This page provides information regarding the 2021 review and revision of the TEKS for technology applications for kindergarten–grade 8.

The revised technology applications TEKS adopted by the SBOE are available in 19 Texas Administrative Code (TAC), Chapter 126, Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Technology Applications.

Technology Applications TEKS Review Process

  • Kindergarten–Grade 8 Work Groups

    The SBOE's process calls for separate work groups. Nominations to serve on TEKS review work groups will be made throughout the review process. The following list includes individuals appointed by the SBOE to serve on the technology applications TEKS review work groups.

    Work Group E Draft Recommendations

    Work Group E met in December 2021 to complete draft recommendations and to ensure that the proposed standards are vertically aligned. The work group's recommendations are provided below in a vertical alignment chart to demonstrate the progression of knowledge and skills across grade levels. Click on the item to download the PDF.

    Work Group D Recommendations

    Work Group D met in late October 2021 to develop recommendations for four strands: computational thinking; communication and collaboration; data literacy, management, and representation; and creativity and innovation.     Work Group C Recommendations

    Work Group B: Strands

    Work Group B met in September 2021 to develop recommendations for new strands and sort the current technology applications TEKS into the new strands. The work group's recommendations are provided in two formats. The Work Group B Recommendations Strands document lists each new strand, the concepts that should be included in each strand, and comments that provide a rationale. The K-8 Technology Applications TEKS Sorted Student Expectations document lists the current student expectations (SEs) and where the work group recommends aligning the SEs in the new strands. Click on the item to download the PDF.

    Work Group A: Planning for Review

    Work Group A met in July 2021 to identify key areas and recurring topics from feedback collected related to the TEKS review process, including content advisor consensus recommendations and the results of the Technology Applications TEKS Review Survey (April 2021–June 2021). The work group was charged with developing recommendations for how subsequent technology applications TEKS review work groups could address the feedback received.   • The following list includes individuals appointed by the SBOE to serve as content advisors for the 2021 review and revision of the technology applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).
     

    Shane Haggerty                     
    Information Technology and STEM Consultant, El Paso

    Shane Haggerty is an information technology (IT) and STEM consultant. He has over 20 years of extensive hands-on experience in network engineering, Window/Linux systems administration, troubleshooting, and repair. He has designed, installed, configured, and maintained complex routed local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs). Mr. Haggerty  has written policies for IT security and other information technology related issues for Ysleta Independent School District. He is a member of Mensa International. Mr. Haggerty holds a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology degree from the University of Phoenix.
     

    Casey Phelps
    Instructional Technology Specialist, Hurst

    Casey Phelps is an instructional technology specialist at Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District. In her current position, she creates and models the combination of technology resources and best practices by using virtual, blended, and live opportunities to deliver professional development for teachers, administrators, and staff that serve students across all grade levels. Ms. Phelps is also a certification facilitator for the National Geographic Society and oversees the Regional Summer Institute for National Geographic. She has presented and published several works that include, Flipping for Summer – Blended Learning; Instructional Best Practices and Instructional Technology for Pre-service Teachers; New Teacher Technology Training; and Discovery Education – Online Inquiry Based Learning. Ms. Phelps holds a Master of Education degree from Lamar University.
